Aberdeen Beach, Aberdeen

Aberdeen Beach runs for two and a half miles in a long curve of sand between the harbour and the mouth of the River Don, with the old fishing village of Fittie tucked in at its southern end. I collected it in the last hour of light, when the wooden groynes throw long shadows down the sand and the big wheel at the funfair catches the sun. In the print it is drawn in heavy ink and flat colour: violet cloud banks rolling in off the North Sea, dunes and marram grass turned to amber, and a thin teal thread of water along the shore. A dog runs out across the sand, the only figure in the scene. Aberdeen Beach is part of the Aberdeen Collection and hangs in the Wild Coastlines series, beside the other places where the sea is the subject.
